How to Set Up A War Room

I recently set up a section of my closet to become my War Room. It’s been super helpful and cute too! For those of you who don’t know, a War Room is basically a prayer closet, or a section of your closet that you pray in. If you’re not sure if you have the space, or if you want to set it all up, or if you’ll have the time to even pray, well, keep reading. Below are some common issues you might have on the subject of a War Room.

I Don’t Have the Space

Well, let me say this: that’s what I thought too when started to question if I should have a War Room, and I have one now. It just took a little rearranging, and I had to move some things out of my closet. I was partly using my closet for storage for other random things as well as for clothes. You might be doing that too! So, take the stuff that aren’t clothes out of your closet, and rearrange a bit. You most likely have room. If you did, and you still don’t have room, try turning a corner or wall of your bedroom into your prayer area. If you don’t have room for that, try a prayer journal! Write down prayers, some Bible verses, and answered prayers in it. Also, you could take a box and turn it into your Prayer Box! Take the lid, and use the inside of it to tape Bible verses and prayers on it as if it was a wall in your War Room, and store your prayer journal, a small Bible, pens, highlighters, and index cards (to write prayers and Bible verses on to tape on the inside of your lid!) in your box. Get creative, because seriously, this kind of stuff will grow your relationship with God.

I Don’t Want to Set it All Up

Setting up a War Room is super fun, and doesn’t take long to set up. I mean just think about it; tucking pillows into a corner, hanging cute Bible verse cards on the wall, and putting a decorative basket with essentials for your War Room on the floor along with a throw blanket! You’ll have fun, trust me!

I Don’t Have the Time to Pray in it

You don’t have to spend hours in it praying! I spend fifteen minutes a day in my War Room on a daily basis. That’s not much time at all, and it flies by. You can squeeze in time before you go to bed, or you could wake up maybe twenty minutes earlier than normal to pray in your War Room. Just write out your schedule, and then pick a time to do it every day so it becomes a habit. Also, schedule that time you pick just like you would schedule an appointment.

I Don’t Have Much/Any Money to Spend on it

Neither did I. My budget was five dollars. But I made it work. I went to a dollar store in my town, to buy the things I needed. Plus, you don’t need a lot of stuff for your War Room, because it’s not about how it looks. If it’s a place where you put sketch pads, crochet supplies, and a bunch of books, it becomes a cool hangout in your closet that you just so happen to pray in. That’s cool, and you can make that somewhere else in your room, but you can’t pray with all that stuff surrounding you, you’d get distracted easily. So, you don’t need a lot of stuff for your War Room, and it’s very budget friendly.

How to Set Up a War Room

1. Pick Where Your War Room Will Be

Whether it’s your whole closet, a corner of your closet, or a nook in your bedroom, the first step to setting up a War Room is to pick your spot. Make sure that the place you pick is private. If you’re doing it in the space under your desk in your bedroom, you could hang a curtain to give yourself privacy and to separate your prayer area from your desk space. Also, make sure that the place you pick won’t distract you.

2. Clean Out You’re Space and Rearrange

Take all clutter and store it somewhere other than your War Room space. If you have baskets full of stuff in your War Room space that aren’t related to prayer, and are in your way, get rid of it. Then, clean out the space with a mop or vacuum, and wipe down the walls with a wet rag. Next, rearrange your stuff. You’ll most likely only need to do this if you picked your closet to be your War Room.

3. Make it Cozy and Functional

For this last step, you put the things in your War Room that you’ll need. Remember, it’s not about how it looks, this is just a place to pray. For me, I added a folded up blanket on the floor to sit on, a big pillow on one wall to lean against, a bulletin board on the other wall, then I filled a basket with my Bible, my prayer journal, pens, prayer cards, sticky notes (which are essential for a War Room), and thumbtacks for the bulletin board. I then put the basket against the wall with the bulletin board above it. Make sure you have some kind of blanket or cushion to sit on to be comfortable, and make sure to have a prayer journal, Bible and pens in a basket in there too. Make sure it’s functional. This was my favorite part of creating my War Room!

Congratulations! You have finished creating your very own War Room! I promise you that you will grow in your relationship with God if you use this War Room every day. Below I list some tips and ideas for your War Room.

  • Schedule a time to use your War Room every day. I also suggest that you do the same time every day. Don’t do 5:00 PM one day, then schedule 7:00 AM for the next day, keep it consistent so that it becomes a habit. Plus, actually be in your War Room on time. You wouldn’t be late to an appointment, so don’t be late to spend time with God!
  • Hang Bible verses on the wall in your War Room. Here are some good ones: Ephesians 3:20, Mark 9:23, Psalm 86:11, 1 Peter 5:7, Matthew 6:6, Philippians 4:6, 1 Thessalonians, 5:16, and Psalm 118:24.
  • Write out the Lord’s Prayer and hang it in your War Room.
  • Pray confidently when you’re in your War Room. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” -Mark  9:23

May God bless you!
