Should I Read This Book?

 Hey! A lot of times when I am looking at books to read, I ask the question, “Should I read this book?”. I want to know if there’s any bad content in it, or if it will be uplifting and clean. So that’s what this post is going to be about. To help you determine whether to read whatever book you have your eye on. 

Websites

Here are a couple websites that have reviews on them, age ratings, and things like that to help you determine if there’s any bad content in the book you’re looking at.

Plugged In This is a website by Focus on the Family that reviews books, movies, etc.

Common Sense Media This website has parent reviews and kid reviews about all kinds of entertainment.

Personally, I trust Plugged In more than the other website because it (Plugged In) is a Christian website. But feel free to click on both of those links to check them out. 

Philippians 4:8

When trying to determine if a book is clean or not, consider this Bible verse. Let it be your key.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things.” -Phil. 4:8, NIV

Final Tips

Okay, so I know that when you’re at a bookstore and you pick up a book, you can’t typically know right off the bat whether it’s going to be clean or not. You need information on it, right? Well, here are some tips:

  • Ask a bookseller at the bookstore to recommend you some books in the store based off your age and what particular kind of book or genre you’re looking for. (I’ve done this recently, and not all the books the bookseller recommended to me were clean, so be aware of that when doing this. Make sure to look closely at the books they recommend and do some quick searches on them on the websites I listed or just on Google.) Also, you can do this at a library too and ask the librarian.
  • Ask your parents to look at them.
  • Try to find sections that are meant for your age. Or sections that say “clean romance books” or “clean fantasy books” -if you can find sections like that. 
  • Christian fiction, fantasy, romance, etc. is typically trustworthy. If you find a Christian YA (whatever genre) book, you can most likely trust it.
  • If you’re reading a book and there’s some kind of content that is ungodly or that you know is wrong or that makes you uncomfortable in any way, put the book down immediately. I’ve had to do this many times, so know that you wouldn’t be the only one doing this.
  • Read the Bible! It’s the most trustworthy book ever. 😊
